Print This Obituary & CondolencesHelen Smith Sutherland, age 98, died peacefully surrounded by her family at her
daughter’s home in Savannah, GA, on Tuesday, March 12th, 2024. Helen was born in
Williston, SC, on November 9th, 1925, to Benjamin and Kitty Smith. She graduated
from Lander College in 1948 with a degree in Home Economics. It was there in
Greenwood, SC, that Helen met the love of her life, Francis “Frank” Earl Sutherland.
Helen and Frank lived most of their married life in Savannah, GA, where they raised
their two children Pamela and Frank, Jr. Helen loved being a homemaker; she was an
avid cook and seamstress. After the death of her husband, Helen moved to Aiken, SC, to
be closer to her siblings. She lived there for the next forty years and was an active
member of South Aiken Presbyterian Church. Helen was predeceased by her husband
Frank and her eleven siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Pam Cunningham
(Pinkney), her son Frank Sutherland, Jr. (Kim), her dear granddaughters Allison Moretz
and Meredith Moretz-Boyer (Grant), her three great grandchildren Hannah, Abigail, and
Connor, and many nieces and nephews who thought of her as a second mother. Miss
Helen, as she was known in the neighborhood, walked three to four miles miles every
day into her mid 90’s and always stopped along the way to visit her many friends. She
treated everyone she met like family. If you’re walking along Barnard Avenue, early one
morning or late afternoon, and feel a hand on your shoulder, it just might be Miss Helen.
Her memorial service will be held in Aiken, SC, and she will be laid to rest beside her
beloved husband Frank in Aiken Memorial Gardens.

In addition to sharing her strength, Lyn brought warmth, humor, and love to her friends and family. She sang and danced with her granddaughters, cooked with her siblings, and created a club with her grammar school best friends where they traveled the US as “doctors” meeting at their “conferences” filled with laughs and unforgettable memories.
A remembrance service to celebrate Lyn’s life will be held on Hilton Head Island, SC for her local family there and in Connecticut during the summer where we can honor her love of sunshine and the beach. Those who knew Lyn are invited to join in honoring her memory – details to follow.
