Michael J. Thornton passed away at his home on August 26, 2020 after having fought a courageous battle with Pancreatic Cancer.
He is survived by his wife Kathy W. Thornton and two stepsons, Jaime Willard and Clifton Willard; grandsons Thomas Willard and Elijah Willard; two sons, Michael Thornton and James Thornton; his friend and ex-wife, Gladys, and many other family members.
He is reunited in Heaven with his family, Marie and Sherrill Annas, Annelle Willard, Robert Mills, James and Elsie Thornton, Karen Thornton Alexander and many others.
Mike is a Vietnam Veteran and was a member of the VFW in Pensacola. He helped build the Vietnam Memorial Wall in downtown Pensacola from the beginning to the Dedication. He also helped rebuild the plane in front of the Pensacola NAS Museum. Mike traveled with his job at NAS Pensacola as a very good Aircraft Mechanic. He was one-of-a-kind. When needed, Mike was called to work on the Blue Angels. Mike was transferred to NAS Jacksonville where he also traveled and retired from after almost thirty years.
Mike became a CVMA (Combat Veteran Motorcycle Association) member of Florida and Georgia. He was proud of the work they do to help other Vets with anything that was needed. Upon retirement, Mike and Kathy moved back to Savannah where he finally found a job he enjoyed, Old Town Trolley. He was forced to leave this job after his Cancer diagnosis.
CVMA will host a cookout in honor of Mike “The Mayor.” There will be a gathering at Kings Ferry Park (on the Ogeechee River), 6811 Chief of Love Road, Savannah, Georgia, on Sunday, October 18th, 2020 at 1:30 PM, preceded by a Patriot Ride from our home. We will meet everyone at the river. (Exit 87, Richmond Hill…head toward Savannah, cross the river and turn right.)
