“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35
My sweet husband lived his life in this way. Samuel Cody Remley, my
beloved husband/partner and friend, passed from his physical body to
an eternal life after a years-long battle with ALS on Veterans Day.
Sam truly knew that it was more blessed to give than to receive. His
generosity knew no bounds.
Sam had a lifelong relationship with advocacy, going back to his high
school days at Jenkins High in Savannah. He worked with inner
city youth during some of the most daunting times of the south,
segregation. He had no fear in becoming deeply involved and doing all to help bridge differences.
He was a veteran of the armed forces and a graduate of Armstong University.
He took great consideration of others and lived his life giving as
much back as he received.
Throughout his illness he continued to mentor and be of comfort to
those struggling with mental illness through the Savannah
Citizen advocacy group.
His relationship with spirituality and religion was also a driving factor in his life.
Exploring many versions of what it meant to be
spiritual or religious…or not. He respected all views and enjoyed
lively discussion on these topics.
An avid reader of world and American history, politics, biographies of many, he had at least 2 or 3 books going at a time. Another of his
favorite hobbies was joyfully walking the neighborhoods for miles
picking up trash with his bare hands as he could not stand the
ugliness of it while out in nature. Our lovely neighbor once
reprimanded him to at least put on rubber gloves.
Sam was a native and resident of Savannah. Although he had not lived
here for years prior, Savannah always held a special place in his
heart and he was thrilled to move back home. The ability to spend time
with his aging parents meant the world to him. He lived life to the
fullest and especially loved spending time with his family, and his
beloved dog Finley who provided such comfort this past year.
His stories and wisdom will be eternally cherished by all who knew
him, he will live in our hearts forever.
Sam is proceeded in death by his parents, William I. Remley and Jean
C. Remley, survived by his
wife, Marie, brother Tim Remley, sister Beth Lewis and husband
Carl. Aunt, Barbara Train, God daughter Leigh Smith Champion, along
with numerous cousins, and plentiful friends.
Services will be held at Wesley Monumental United Methodist Church.
429 Abercorn St, Savannah, Ga. Sunday December 8th at 3:00 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the ALS.org organization
in Sam’s name.
