Public Schools, Haven Homes Elementary

And Alfred E. Beach High. After leaving High

School, Charles enlisted into the United States

Army, In June 16, 1967 serving Until August 2, 1972.

 

He is a Vietnam Veteran, He received

The National Defense Service Medal, Parachute Badge,

Vietnam Service Medal, Code of Conduct Medal,

Vietnam Campaign Medal, And Basic Air Borne Medal

 

He leaves to cherish his Loving Memories:

He was born on April 9th, 1929 in Portland, Maine, joined the Marines in 1946, and upon discharge in 1949 settled in Silver Spring, Maryland. He pursued a career as a professional ballroom dancer and teacher, owning a successful Arthur Murray Studio in Washington, D.C..

 

He enjoyed watching most sports, but was an avid enthusiast of Washington Redskins football and Atlanta Braves baseball.

 

With a strong interest in American History, he read everything he could about the American Civil War and World War II.

 

He had a soft spot for all animals, delighting in numerous family cats and dogs. There was nothing better to him than reading the daily newspaper with a purring cat on his shoulder and a big dog nestled at his feet.

 

He married Elvira C. A. Shuck in 1974 and moved to Coral Springs, Florida.

 

He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Elvira C. A. Burns; one son, Philip (Lauren) Burns; 2 step-daughters, Stormi-Lea Fitschen (Dennis Ferland) & Dew-Ann (Larry) Cunningham; a step-son, Bruce (Rose) Shuck; 6 grandchildren, Mary (Kris) Shuman, Frank Fitschen, Lynsey Shuck, Kylee Shuck, Kristyn (Scott) Maynard, and Jonathan Ferland; and 4 great-grandchildren, Tyler Santosuosso, Jason Walters, Jr., Samantha Maynard, & Emily Maynard.

 

The family would like to extend a special thank you for the blessed and loving care provided by the staff of The Place at Pooler. Also, a thank you to Hospice Savannah for their care and compassion.

 

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Hospice Savannah or the charity of your choice.

Born in West Point, Georgia to Albert Fleming and Onediea Estelle Robinson Fleming, Vivian lived in Queens, New York, Des Moines, Iowa, and Savannah, Georgia. Receiving a Bachelor’s Degree from New York University, she worked in Human Resources with Goodwill for 10 years and retired after 22 years with the American Cancer Society. She was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and the National Human Resources Association (NHRA.)

Ms. Fleming participated in sit-ins during the long struggle for Civil Rights, was in the Harlem Girls Choir and did a lot of inner-city work, taught literary programs in Savannah, was one of the founders of the Savannah Childrens Community Choir, and was an actress/singer in many community productions.

Preceded in death by her parents and a great-grandson, Antonio Cutter, Jr., she is survived by a daughter, Joslyn Fleming; son-in-law, Raymond Turner; sister and brother-in-law, Aleatha and Joseph Turner; grandchildren, Raven Cutter (Antonio), Brook Ali (Charles), LeAnn Fleming, Albert Fleming, Garry Bragg, & Ayanna Ali; 11 great-grandchildren; and best friend, Rosemary Miles.

 

Visitation: Saturday, 12:30 P.M. to 1:30 P.M. at Families First Funeral Care. Funeral Services will follow at 1:30 P.M. Interment: Magnolia Memorial Park.

A native of Tallapoosa County, Alabama, he was the son of James David Thompson and Ida Mae Taylor Thompson.   He was a member of Radiant Life Christian Fellowship in Savannah.

 

Preceded in death by his parents and 2 great-granddaughters, Haleigh Warren & Amber Wallace, Bill is survived by; his wife, Betty Lou Thompson; 7 children, Tammy Conrad (Eric) of Eagle, Idaho, Charles Thompson, Jr. (Susan) of Guyton, Cindy Marie Brunson (Jimmy) of Port Wentworth, Charles Fox (Cheryl) of Savannah, James Fox (Susie) and John Fox (Lori) of Chicago, and Margie Warren (Edward) of Savannah; 2 brothers and a sister, Winford Thompson of Troy, Alabama, John Thompson of Notasulga, Alabama, and Elma Joe Adcock (Tony) of Troy, Alabama; 24 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

 

The family will receive friends Thursday, August 1st from 10:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. at Radiant Life Christian Fellowship. Funeral Services will be held immediately following at 1:00 pm from Radiant Life Christian Fellowship, with interment to follow at Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park – East  in Savannah.
