Douglas “Doug” White died peacefully on Tuesday, March 24, in Savannah, Georgia, after a long and hard-fought second battle with cancer. When it returned, Doug faced it the same way he lived his life: head-on, with a little humor and undeniable strength.
Originally from Macon, GA. Doug spent the last 26 years of his life on and around Tybee Island, where he became nothing short of a legend. To many, he was a familiar face behind the bar at the Windrose and later the Sandbar. For countless newcomers to Tybee, Doug was often their first friend—one who welcomed them in, made them feel at home, and kept them coming back. He had a way of making people feel seen; his gruff exterior was matched only by his warm heart.
Connection was at the heart of who Doug was, and music was one of the ways he shared it. An esteemed musician, Doug played bass guitar with both skill and soul. He had a deep love for the arts and a particular appreciation for antiques and folk art. He was drawn to pieces with history, character, and a story to tell—much like the people he surrounded himself with.
Doug also found connection in online gaming where he took great pride in building and creating. He formed lasting friendships with those he played alongside, especially with his close-knit group who spent countless hours together in Red Dead Redemption and 7 Days to Die. Among them, he will be remembered as a stew-eating “Westicle.” Whether through music, conversation, or the spaces he helped shape, Doug carried a quiet reverence for creativity and expression that will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Beneath the rough-around-the-edges demeanor was a man with a generous heart, someone who would give you the shirt off his back without hesitation. He was known for his sharp wit, his unmistakable presence, and honest advice. Doug’s absence will be deeply felt across Tybee Island and beyond, but his legacy will live on through the stories, friendships, and the community he helped build.
Doug is survived by his son, Dustin Ray White; his brother, Daniel “Buffy” White; and his sisters, Donna Cannon and Denise Walker.
A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

Doug was a good man and a true friend. I met him at Windrose. He always looked out for my friends and I, and he quickly became one of those friends. He used to crank the volume on death metal when tourists would come in, propping his foot up on the bar while lighting a cigarette. I’ll always remember him as the amazing, welcoming person he was.

My heart is truly broken. He was the best of the best of men. His beautiful soul was a blessing to all who had the privilege of calling him friend and being loved by him. My prayers are with all his family and many friends and my love will always and forever be with him

Him and I met through music. He always asked us to play at the Windrose and we never said no. Such a awesome dude to call friend.

My heartfelt condolences to Buffy. Donna, and Denise. I hope that hearing how much Doug meant to so many people will help ease your pain some. One of the kindest and most easy going people I have ever run across, a true friend who will always be fondly remembered. Thank you for the role you played in so many great memories.
