Herman Samuel Garfield Lathan

Herman Samuel Garfield Lathan was born on February 19, 1943 to Lefroy Turner Garfield and Frederica Ann Elizabeth Lathan. He was the third of twelve children from that union. He also had two other siblings from his father.
On April 23, 1963 Herman married the love of his life, Kathleen Young. Their union produced eight children, four boys and four girls. Together they raised their family to serve Jehovah. Herman had no problem assisting with household duties such as cleaning, cooking, delivering babies and changing diapers. He was a stern disciplinarian and every child, no matter who they belonged to, knew “not to play with” Uncle Herman or Brother Lathan. Just a look from him would set you straight! Herman loved doing things with his children. Travelling to International Assemblies, pedal bike riding, camping on the beach, and going to the movies are just a few of the things he used to do with them.
He became one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1971. He continued to make refinements in order to meet Jehovah’s standards and served many years in the full-time ministry. He loved sharing what he learned from the Bible with anyone he came in contact with. He had a special way of connecting with people that was unique. He was instrumental in helping many people to accept the “truth,” including his mother, two of his brothers and two of his sisters.
Herman was very hospitable and would readily help out whenever he could. Even when his health was deteriorating he still assisted with security on a Kingdom Hall build. Unfortunately, Hermen encountered serious health complications and passed away on Monday, July 31, 2017.
