James LeConte Stone, Jr. passed away peacefully July 13, 2016 due to complications from a fall. He was 93 years old. Known to friends as “Conte” (pronounced Count), he was born in Louisville, Kentucky on April 2, 1923. He is survived by his wife Dorothy of 69 years, daughter Janice Dinen, son-in-law Tom Dinen, son Jim Stone, daughter-in-law Roxanne Stone, grandson Joshua Dinen and his wife Kasia Dinen, grandson Michael Dinen and his wife Kathryn Dinen, and great-grandson Fredrick Dinen. He is also survived by two of his four sisters Alberta Campbell and Bunky Mathis both still living in Louisville.

His young life in Kentucky was filled with hunting and golf. He was an excellent athlete in school playing basketball, baseball, and golf. He was a Sargent in the US Army in WWII serving in France and Germany. He was a sales and advertising executive with R.L. Polk which took him and his family on a journey across the country moving from Louisville to live in Memphis, Buffalo, Detroit, Huntington Beach, Honolulu, and Sacramento. He retired in 1985 and moved to Valley Springs, California, then relocated to San Antonio, Texas and then to Savannah in 2006.

He was very active in his Christian faith. He taught and led evangelism teams in California and Hawaii. He was one of the earliest members of Fellowship of Christian Athletes as well as a board member at Gideon’s International and Full Gospel Businessmen.

Conte never met a stranger and truly loved meeting and talking with people. He was a great communicator and a friend to many.

There is a Celebration of his life service this Monday, July 18th, 2016 at the Tybee Post Theater on Tybee Island at 4:30pm. Everyone is invited. He never wanted a sad and somber service. He loved life and wanted to celebrate the fact that God loves us all.
