Joann Gillis, 87, of Chicago, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 20th. Born on March 16, 1938, Joann was the youngest child of Edward and Stella Pionkowski. She grew up on the South Side of Chicago with her sisters, Bea and Elaine—a lively trio known for their holiday gatherings, travel adventures, and the deep bond they shared throughout their lives.
As a child, Joann loved roller skating, bowling, and sewing her own clothes—hobbies that hinted early at her creativity and spirit. She later majored in Home Economics at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, where she cultivated her lifelong passions for cooking, entertaining, and gardening. Friends and family will remember her table always overflowing with fresh vegetables and meals prepared from recipes she clipped and saved with care.
During the years she devoted to raising her three daughters, Joann gave her time generously. She volunteered at her children’s school and at the family’s church, where she once served as co-chair of its world-famous rummage sale. She lent her energy and sewing skills to Winnetka’s first-ever creativity class, Kix & Co., alongside her best friend, Lyn Brasser, and supported the Hunger Project, committing herself to the mission of ending global hunger.
In 1974, Joann embarked on a career path that showcased her strong work ethic and willingness to learn. She joined a three-person start-up, the Meridian Group, focused on a then-unfamiliar concept: computer leasing. With characteristic focus and drive, she thrived as the company expanded, contributing to a decade of rapid growth and professional success. She later worked for the mental wellbeing support center for the AFSCME Union, where she was deeply respected by colleagues and grateful to work under her beloved supervisor, Steve Haught.
Joann retired joyfully on her 65th birthday, embracing a chapter of life where she could be close to each of her daughters—Martha in Evanston, IL; Audrey in Savannah, GA; and Jane in Tacoma, WA. She was immensely proud of all three: Martha, who followed in her father’s footsteps into the field of law; Audrey, who built a successful career in business; and Jane, who earned her doctorate in nursing.
A lifelong believer in the value of staying active and well, Joann found peace and vitality in wellness retreats, yoga, and the simple pleasures of a healthy lifestyle. Whether exercising before work, tending her garden, or encouraging others to “eat something green,” she lived with intention and grace.
Joann was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Stella Pionkowski; her sisters and brothers-in- law, Tom and Bea Roche and Al and Elaine Hersey; and her sons-in-law, Duane Hawk and Cal Wessman. She is survived by her daughters—Martha, Audrey, and Jane—along with her beloved grandchildren, Linirose McKeown and Ryan and Andy Wessman. She is also survived by her nieces, Kathleen Valusek and Rose Fialko, and her nephews, Tom and Jim Roche and George Wilhelmson.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to America’s Second Harvest, reflecting Joann’s lifelong commitment to nourishing others and building a more compassionate world.
