John W. Lovato, 64, of Savannah, GA, passed away unexpectedly on August 20, 2024 at his
home.
He was born in Denver, CO, on December 18, 1959, son of the late John Lovato and Iris
Stansberry. He is survived by his spouse, Billie Bemis, his four children, Ashley Cover, Lindsey
Lovato, Jonathan Lovato, and Ariana Lovato from his previous marriage to Anne Fox as well as
his grandchildren Derek Catalan, Kaylee Cover, Ella Lovato-Ruzieva, Aubree Cover, Oliver
Pena, Jaxon Cover, Hudson Pena, Colton Cover. He is also survived by his sister Mel
Cunningham (Lovato) and his nieces Heather Cunningham and Natalie Sanchez and his great-
nieces Ciela, Mirage, and Ivy.
John was preceded in death by both of his parents and his niece Brandy Cunningham.
John graduated from Aurora Central High School in 1978. He was passionate about music,
particularly the Grateful Dead and coined himself a hippie and a “deadhead”, following the
Grateful Dead to many concerts in many states. In addition to music, John loved sports both
playing and watching them. The Raiders, no matter where they were located, was his favorite
football team and watching them was a requirement every Sunday. John was also passionate
about the Chicago Cubs which began with fond memories of listening to the Cubs games on the
transistor radio with his grandpa. He was ecstatic when the Cubs finally won the World Series in
2016 after a 100+ year drought.
John struggled with addiction early in his life until the age of 31 when he connected with his
Alcoholics Anonymous family that helped him find and maintain sobriety. John would have been
sober for 33 years on August 23, 2024, an accomplishment that speaks to his strength and
resilience. He spent many years sharing his strength, experience, and hope with others to help
them gain the same gift he received.
Billie was John’s soulmate and the love of his life. Moving to GA with their two pooches,
Jackson, FiFi le Peu was the biggest adventure of both of their lives and where they both found
true happiness and their third fur baby Willow. While in GA, John worked for Timber Products
and made friendships, as he did everywhere he went, that have lasted through time and space.
His last job, and maybe his most rewarding job, was working for the City of Savannah as a
public servant, which fed his constant drive to be of service to others. John loved and was loved
by his fellow city employees.
John was loved by many and will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and anyone who met
his sparkling light.
The funeral service will be held at Families First Funeral Care on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 @ 11:00 AM.
