Luis Carrion Robles, 81, affectionately known as Yu by his family and close friends, of Savannah, GA, passed away on August 2, 2025. He was born in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, on July 23, 1944, the youngest of nine children of Diego Carrion Figueroa and Mercedes Robles Cruz.
Yu spent much of his childhood in New York City before returning to his beloved Puerto Rico around 1958. In 1962, he married Nereida “Nelly” Laureano Laureano, and the couple made their home in Luquillo, PR. After working in several local factories, Yu became the proud owner of Kiosko #45 among the famed Luquillo kiosks in 1984, managing it successfully until he and Nelly relocated to San Antonio in 2003. In 2020, he moved to Savannah, GA, to be closer to his daughters.
A passionate gardener, Yu delighted in acquiring, sharing, and nurturing plants. He was also a talented and enthusiastic cook, joyfully sharing his favorite Puerto Rican dishes with family and friends. His grandchildren were a constant source of pride and joy, and he spoke of them with great love. Known for his larger-than-life spirit—always doing everything bigger, longer, and harder than anyone else—Yu leaves behind a legacy of humor, strength, and unforgettable personality.
Yu was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nelly, in 2008.
He is survived by his cherished sister, Raquel Pabon; his daughters, Yadira Vongsvarnrungruang (Joseph), Syndia Carrion-Laureano (Troy Deisinger), and Annette Conroy (Jeff); his grandchildren, Gabriela, Olivia, Mercedes, Isabella, Elena, Sean, and Timothy; as well as many nieces and nephews.
His unique spirit, warmth, and zest for life will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
