Martha Ann Greenhoe Kaufman, 71, passed away Monday, July 25, 2022.

Born in Sheridan, Michigan, Martha was the daughter of the late Austin and Lena Greenhoe. Martha graduated from Carson City High School, and earned her bachelor’s Degree in Sociology and Anthropology from Manchester College. She worked in adoptions for five years before returning to a life of volunteer work. She and her husband moved to Culebra, Puerto Rico, with Brethren Volunteer Service where she helped the community found a center to address the needs of special needs children on the small isolated island, an organization that continues to provide services today. After 20 years her family moved to Savannah Georgia. There she worked in foster care, acted as a certified interpreter in the Judicial system, and provided classes in Domestic Violence for Spanish speakers until her death.

Surviving are her husband Robert Kaufman, son Jesse Kaufman, brother Bruce Greenhoe, sister Brenda Greenhoe, nephews Brandon (Teri) Greenhoe and Jacob Greenhoe, niece Rachael (Nishan) Greenhoe Pethiyagoda, and granddaughter Savana Jessilyn Kaufman.

A memorial service is 3pm Saturday, August 20, 2022 at Families First Funeral Care at 1328 Dean Forest Road, Savannah Georgia, with calling hours from 2:30pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.

Condolence from Steve Newcomer on August 6th, 2022 11:05 am

Dear Bob and Jesse,
Word just reached me about Martie’s passing. I can hardly believe someone so young and full of life is gone! I am so, so sorry for your loss. Indeed it is a loss for everyone who knew her. You and Martie were my dearest friends when I lived for a short time in Puerto Rico. I couldn’t have lasted as long as I did there without your friendship. Your selfless work on behalf of the Culebrense will be remembered for decades to come.
My heart goes out to you. I will always cherish the days we spent in your home and at Playa Flamenco.
Paz, Amor y Abrazos,
Steve Newcomer

Bob, Jesse, and Savana, I was so sorry to hear about Mart’s passing . My memories of you ,and her go back to the 1970’s when we first met. The years you lived in Kalamazoo and we saw more of each other were some fun times. I know the last time I saw her was at Rachel’s wedding . It was so nice to see her again. Please except my deepest condolences.

Bob, I am so sorry to learn of Martie’s passing. She was a special friend and always willing to help this “gringo” interact and report on South Georgia’s Hispanic community, many of whom existed on the fringes of society and were underserved by the safety nets that served so many others. Christ said “If you love me, feed my sheep.” Martie lived her life in service to this calling. But one of the things I most admired about her was her willingness to call out fake piety and sanctimoniousness. She had a sharp intellect and a wicked sense of humor. She was a true original and the world is a much poorer place with her passing. I know she loved you and Jessie and adored Savanna.
