Mary Elizabeth Burdsal passed away at home on September 9,2021. She was born in Savannah, Georgia May 4, 1946. Mary graduated from Georgia College and the University of South Carolina with a Master’s Degree in Social Work which led to a 34 year career in Child Protective Services at the Department of Family and Children Services. She was admired and respected by many for her work in this area.

Mary loved her family home and sharing the peace and serenity it brought her. She loved watching sunsets on the dock, puttering on the creek, and walks with her good friends. She also cherished her time in the mountains and catching up with her longtime friends. Mary will be missed for her sweet smile, quick sense of humor, and playful nature; her generous and giving spirit; and her loving heart. Mary was a talented artist and freely shared her creations. She was admired for her courage and strength in the face of obstacles. Mary was devoted to her wife of 37 years and deeply loved her family and friends.

Mary was preceded in death by parents Virgil and Katherine Burdsal and brother Raymond Burdsal. She is survived by her wife Debbie Bennett, brothers Jim Burdsal (Carol) and Paul Burdsal (Karen), sister-in-law Nancy Burdsal; and other extended family including aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Mary’s Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. A good way to honor and remember Mary is to share a smile with someone.

Condolence from Jane Boling Branham on September 13th, 2021 10:33 am

Prayers for Debbie and the family. Mary was a dedicated supervisor at DFACS in the nineties when I worked there. She always had a smile on her face and a kind word of encouragement. I am sure she will be missed by many… .

My thoughts and prayers are with Debbie Bennett and the entire Burdsal family at this sad time…I know you all have fond memories of Mary, as do I…Mary and I worked together at Chatham County DFCS for many years…I started at Chatham County DFCS in the case management ranks, but later joined Mary in management…She was a pleasure to work with…Although her passing may be painful at this time, please be assured that God will ease the pain as time goes by…It’s the wonderful memories that you have of Mary that will keep her in your hearts and sustain you for years to come.

Debbie – so sorry to hear of Mary’s passing. I always enjoyed talking with both of you at the Aquatic Center. Mary had such a lovely, kind soul. You are in our prayers.
