Matthew Scott Roper, 51, passed away on Saturday, January 14, 2023.
Matthew was born on August 4, 1971. He loved the Lord, his son Tanner, and his church. He was known for being very well-groomed and always put together. Not only did Matthew enjoy birds and wind chimes, he was also a big child at heart and shared a mutual love for toys with his son, so it was not uncommon to find them both playing together with airplanes and other games. Despite being a simple man, Matthew’s love for his friends and family transcendent above and beyond.
He was a member of former Aldersgate UMC and a Charter Member of Connexion United Methodist Church. Matthew loved his church family as much as they loved him. He leaves behind family, friends, and many people who love him and will miss him dearly.
He is survived by his sister, Alicia Watts; his mother, Julie Cooper; and his son Tanner Proctor.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be sent to Connexion UMC or a charity of your choice.
Family and friends are invited to honor our beloved Matthew at the service on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at the Connexion Church on 5411 Skidaway Rd, Savannah, GA 31406, at 12:00 p.m. lead by Preacher Michael Culbreth.

As family, we are comforted by the knowledge of Matthew’s salvation through Christ Jesus! His father, Phillip Earl Roper, shared his faith & the two of them discussed the Bible many times. Matt was a sympathetic loving older brother to Daniel! He called & talked to him many nights & continued to be involved in his life. We extend our deepest sympathies to the rest of the family.

I went through school with Matthew. He had a great personality that he was just friendly and easy to like. His laugh was infectious. It sounds like he was involved in church and a giving person. RIP Matthew.

Matthew was one of my best friends. What I loved most about him was his compassion for other people, especially those in need. He always gave to the homeless no matter if he had the means to or not. If he didn’t he would bum it off me. I’m glad he is at peace and out of pain. Fly high my friend…Fly High!
