Thomas Baxter Faris Jr. of Ridgeland, SC passed away on March 30, 2023 at Memorial University Medical Hospital in Savannah, GA. Thom was born on July 4th, 1949 in Tucson, AZ. As a child he lived in Nebraska, Ohio, Libya, Morocco, Alabama and Virginia before moving to Columbia, SC where he graduated with a degree in Political Science from the University of South Carolina in 1976. Thom spent his professional career at Builderama, Espy Lumber and Grayco overseeing client relations and sales.

Thom had a steadfast commitment to attending every birthday celebration, art exhibition, graduation, military advancement ceremony, and barrel-racing competition, no matter where it was held. He will be remembered by many in his family for assisting them with car sales’ negotiations. He will not be so kindly remembered, however, by those car salesmen. Thom relished being the first to wish a happy birthday to friends, family and friends-of-friends on Facebook, frequently posting celebratory memes at midnight. He had a deep love for telling stories (and the occasional tall tale), GRIT TV, making giblet gravy, hosting get-togethers on his farm, and spending a whole day tending to his dogs, ducks, horses and lap-cat. Thom regularly attempted to sneak out of family gatherings without saying goodbye, as if his absence would, or could, go unnoticed. Everyone missed him when he left, and now, more than ever.

Thom was a loving grandfather to Bailey Faris, Brittany Locke, and Ginny, Rosie, and Delilah Novis. He is survived by his sister, Evelyn Mickle, brother-in-law Charles Mickle; niece Sherril Rawlinson and her husband John; his former wife Elizabeth and their children Thomas F. Faris and his wife Cherri, Sara Faris and her husband Itan, and jAnthony Faris, as well as his two great-nephews William and Thomas Rawlinson, his partner Kathy Collins, and many relatives and friends near and far. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lt. Colonel Thomas B. Faris and Evelyn (Sugar) Faris, brother Frank C. Faris, and sister Marianne Faris.

A celebration of Thom’s life will be planned for the Spring or Summer.

The family requests any Memorials be directed to Jasper Animal Rescue Mission at https://jarmission.org/donate/ (1352 Carters Mill Road Ridgeland, SC 29936).

Condolences for the family of “Thomas Baxter Faris Jr.”

Condolence from Elizabeth A. Faris on April 5th, 2023 4:12 pm

Love is not always easy to keep. But it is even harder to leave behind totally, no matter what. I just hope he knew that he was loved. I just hope he found love again. I just know that his grandkids lost the best part of him and that love lives in each of them. And those he left behind will never be the same because we couldn’t say good-bye. You gave me the most beautiful children and for them I will always love you.

Condolence from Ann McCraw Snyder on April 6th, 2023 7:21 am

Thom was always a leader among us cousins, and I looked up to him as a fun and benevolent elder. I am sorry that we went through our young and middle adulthoods so far apart and out of touch, but I will always be grateful for the Faris siblings’ beach reunions in our older age. He was so generous always, so comfortable to be with, and I will never forget the joy of getting to know the beautiful and very loving family that he and Beth made.
This note hardly touches the tearful grief I feel right now. To his close family and friends, I send my condolences and I hope that your memories of Thom’s precious life will bring you some comfort.

Sorry for your family’s loss. I loved the way Thom was at every exhibition that showcased Anthony’s art. He always had a great story to share or keen observation about the work. I enjoyed every conversation and can’t imagine a show without him there.
