Thomas Scanlon (Tommy), a devoted man of faith and a proud Veteran of the United States Marine Corps, entered into the eternal rest with his Lord on July 7, 2026 at the young age of 58.
He was born and raised in Deer Park, New York. Growing up in Deer Park, Tommy attended Sts Cyril and Methodist Catholic elementary school and went onto graduate from Deer Park High School with the class of 1986. Following graduation he answered the call to serve his country in the Marine Corps, honorably serving during the Gulf War with the same quiet bravery and faith that guided his entire life.
In death, Tommy is peacefully reunited with his beloved common law partner Darlene (2021); his parents, John (2018) and Mary (2020) and his baby brother Jackie (1957).
Tommy‘s memory will be cherished by his siblings Maryellen and Michael; Darlene‘s three children, Katty, April and John; his best friend Kurt, and his cat Patches.
Tommy was always a quiet man of faith and served both God and his country with a silent strength. Having walked his path with humility and loyalty, he has now completed his earthly mission and has returned home to the ultimate commander. His final watch is over, and he rests eternally in the peace of the Lord.

Internment will be at a Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton New York. The date will be announced when arrangements are completed.

In Loving Memory of My Brother, Tommy came into the world just before Christmas, bringing a special joy to our family from the very start. From the day he came home from the hospital, he was deeply loved and cared for by me, his older and only sister. I couldn’t wait to rush home from school every single day just to be with him. As a little boy, Tommy was full of personality. On his second birthday, he even tagged along on my very first date with Louie. We went shopping at TSS and took him to A&S to see Santa Claus, followed by a birthday song at the diner for lunch. Tommy was a constant companion on so many of our outings from the time he was just two years old. He was also hilariously persistent. During a trip to W.T. Grant’s, he spotted a bag of cosmetic puffs and insisted they were “marshmallows.” After a long, funny debate back and forth, I finally gave in. For just 27 cents, Tommy got his way. He quickly realized his mistake, exclaiming, “Uh, these are not marshmallows!” before spitting it right out on the floor. I handed him a tissue to put it in the garbage while everyone around us had a good laugh. It became a beloved, lifelong inside joke, and I lovingly reminded him of that day by buying him cosmetic puffs occasionally. In September of 1973, Tommy was preparing to start first grade and served as the ring bearer in my wedding to Louie. While shopping for his school bag, lunch box, and school supplies, he spotted my packed suitcase and asked where I was going. When I told him it was for my honeymoon, Tommy said, “I’ll be right back.” He returned with his school bag packed with bathing suits and pajamas, and his lunch box packed with snacks, proudly announcing, “I am going on your moon with you and Louie.” It was in that exact moment my heart realized we wouldn’t be spending every day together anymore. When I explained that he had to start first grade while I was away, Tommy insisted he could just start school “after the moon.” Even before the wedding, whenever he came with us to look at apartments, he would confidently look around and ask, “Where is my room?”There are so many more memories of Tommy being my baby brother that bring a smile to my face today, and I am so deeply grateful for them as they ease the grief I feel during these difficult days. When Tommy grew up and joined the Marines, I cried and prayed for him every single day. I later drove Mom, Jenna, Karen, and Martha all the way down to his graduation at Parris Island—the longest distance I have ever driven by myself—just to bring him home before he received his orders. Our family was incredibly proud of him for being a Marine and serving our country during the Gulf War. Tommy, you are loved and missed by so many, and most especially by me.
