Benjamin Clarence Singleton, Jr., age 56, of Savannah died Tuesday, November 8th, 2016 at Hospice Savannah.

Born in Miami, Florida to Benjamin Clarence Singleton, Sr. and Clara Bell Grant Singleton. He was in the roofing industry for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Cassandra Singleton.

Surviving are his daughter, Monifa Gregory (Jerome) of Warner Robins,  son, Benjamin McIver of Savannah,  daughter, Anitra McIver of Savannah, five sisters, Patricia Heyward (Herbert) of Savannah, Albertha Singleton Brown of Savannah, Clarissa Walker of Statesboro, Lena Woolford of Savannah, Pamela Golden of Savannah, nine grandchildren, three great grandchildren, three aunts, Ernestine Singleton, Louise Douglas, Ophelia Grant, two uncles, Joseph Singleton, Willie Grant, a host of newphews, nieces and other relatives and his significant other, Sharon Travis.

Arrangements will be private.

Trying to sum up a person’s life, who they were, the impact they made on the people in their life, their existence, and their accomplishments, can hardly be done in a few short paragraphs.

Mary was my mom.

She was the epitome of strength, your most loyal friend; you could walk softly because she was behind you as your big stick. She, like most, hit a few bumps in the road, but always came through it humbled and stronger.

She was a loving daughter, mother, sister, and aunt. She was born on November 26, 1965 in Laurel, Maryland. Although born in Maryland, she was raised in Savannah, Georgia. She graduated from Alfred E. Beach High School in 1984. She then went on to obtain her cosmetology license. In 1995, Mary welcomed her only child Brittany, into the world. February 2002, she married the love of her life and father of her daughter, Derrick R. Clark. In 2008, while successful in completion of the requirements needed for Dental Assisting, she was unable to further pursue a career due to a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. Instead, she worked alongside her father at his local hair salon.  In March of this year (2016), she was unexpectedly diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer. The word cancer, alone, is devastating, but paired with stage IV is almost unimaginable- except it’s not, it actually happens.  After the initial shock, my mother told me, “I have too much to live for, I will not go down with out a fight.”

After completing ten rounds of radiation, one cyberknife treatment, four rounds of “hardcore” chemotherapy, she then moved on to a less toxic chemotherapy. Unfortunately, after one round of the “baby stuff” (maintenance chemo), her health started declining. With many blood transfusions, and multiple long stays at the hospital; Mary came home with the care of at home Hospice.

On Monday, November 7, 2016, my mom did NOT lose her fight against cancer, she won. She is now in a place where cancer does not exist. Where chemotherapy, blood transfusions, platelets, and oxygen tanks are not required for a decent, tolerable, life. In my opinion, that is a win, not a loss.

Mary was preceded in death by her brother, James (Bubba) L. Wilson, maternal grandmother, Lolamae Bazemore, maternal grandfather, Grover W. Wilson, her paternal grandmother, Mary Elizabeth (Peggy) Lindamood, and paternal grandfather, Joseph Ganam Lindamood.

She is survived by her parents, Michael S. Hildreth and Shirley L. Hildreth, significant other, Derrick R. Clark, daughter, Brittany M. Hildreth, sister, Michelle D. Rush and her fiancé, Steven S. Coover. Niece, Megan B. Rush, great niece, Ryleigh N. Carter, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Visitation will be Friday, November 11, 2016 from 1 to 2 pm with a funeral service following at 2 pm at the Families First Funeral Care Chapel. Burial will be in Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park – West.

Jimmy J. Cowart, age 42, of Savannah, passed away Sunday, November 6th, 2016.

Born May 29, 1974 in Brunswick, Georgia, Jimmy was the son of Johnnie J. and Patricia Ann Cowart. he accepted the Lord as his Savior at the age of sixteen at Magnolia Baptist Church (now New Vision Baptist Church.) Jimmy worked as groundskeeper at the Ford Plantation in Richmond Hill.

Jimmy is survived by his parents, two brothers, William Shuman (Carrie) of Savannah & Danny Joe Cowart (Bonnie) of Jacksonville, Florida; a son Jay Norris of Waynesboro, Virginia; nephews, Ryan Zachary Shuman, Bryce Garrett Shuman, Corby Cowart, and Israel Cowart; nieces, Ashton Whittlesey, Tymber Cowart, and Carter Tomberlin; several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The family will receive friends on Friday, November 11th from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at Trinity Baptist Church, 1805 Cartertown Road, Richmond Hill. Funeral Services will follow at 11:00 A.M. in the church. Interment: Westside Memory Gardens in Bloomingdale.

Sandra Ann McDow, 62, “Sandy” to her family and friends, passed from this life on October 31, 2016 after a short illness. She was born on October 15, 1954 in Savannah, Georgia and was employed by Gulfstream Aerospace for the past 24 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James E. McDow, W. Nell Jenkins and Emory Talmadge Jenkins. She is survived by her sisters, Shirley M. McDow and Cheryl J. Ford, niece, Ashley (Mark) Ford Nelson, nephew Daniel (Hannah) Kessler, Jr., three great nephews, Jaxom Nelson, Trace and Tyler Kessler, and great niece, Teagan Kessler. She is also survived by several aunts, uncles, cousins, her Texas family and a host of friends who considered her family and many lovingly called her “Aunt Sandy.”

Sandy brightened every room she entered and was known for her vivaciousness, generosity, and caring, sharing spirit. She made friends easily and was always there with a kind word or listening ear.

She was a member of the Oak Grove Church of Christ in Rincon, Georgia. She was also a member of the Robert W. Groves High School Alumni Breakfast Club and The Magnolias.

The family will receive visitors at 6:00 P.M. on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at the Parkway Church of Christ, 4360 Ogeechee Road, Savannah, with a Memorial Service to follow at 7:00 P.M..

In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a donation in Sandy’s memory to the American Cancer Society, Hospice Savannah, or your favorite charity.
